Health And Safety

On November 9 2009 VicRoads introduced some changes to Victoria's road safety rules. One major change is that using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, except to make or receive a phone call provided the phone:

  • is secured in a commercially designed holder fixed to the vehicle, or

  • can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone

It is the ACLCA view that the safest practice is to not use any mobile phone whilst driving, even if it meets the above rule. A number of our member companies already require mobile phones to be off when car engines are on. More information on all of the changes is available at the VicRoads web site.

ACLCA has just published a new HEALTH and SAFTEY ALERT - on TRAVEL SAFETY. New HAZARD Alerts have also been posted. View these via the hyperlinks to Health and Safety Alerts and Hazard Alerts or via the menus on the left.

The ACLCA OHS sub-committee usually meets on the last Thursday of each month at 7:30-9:00am. All interested members are most welcome. Check the location details on the events calendar, and advise ACLCA of you attendance via info@aclca.org.au.  Topics currently being discussed include: asbestos, lessons learnt, JSAs and Toolbox Talks, how to instill culture change to avoid the silly accidents and OHS training.

Calibration of LEL and PID MetersThe LEL/PID should be calibrated to the gas of most interest. At a landfill this might be methane, but at a service station this might be n-Hexane.
